Different Law Entrance Tests in India for Law Aspirants

A degree in law from a well-known college or university offers boundless career progression opportunities. Unfortunately the numbers of seats in these reputable institutions are limited and the intake ratio is pretty low. It is therefore safe to assume that you need to do well in your intermediate board exams as well as crack immensely tough entrance exams to gain admission in these hallowed pantheons that equip you with sound knowledge of law and their application in real world.

Some of the important entrance tests that are conducted on all India level for aspirants seeking admission in best university north India or other coveted colleges in the country are mentioned as following:

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)

This entrance exam consisting of 200 questions, which tests a candidate’s ability in English, Mathematics, GK, and logical reasoning, is conducted for admission to top class fourteen National Law Schools. Clearing this strenuous competitive exam will make you eligible for admissions to reputable under graduate program of highly prestigious institutions like NALSAR Hyderabad, NLSIU, Bangalore, WBNUJS Kolkata, National Law University of Orissa (NLUO), Cuttack, National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, etc.

Eligibility criteria for CLAT


  • Candidates should have passed Higher Secondary School/Intermediate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/OBC and persons with Disability).
  • The aspirant should not be of age exceeding 20 years and 22 years in case of SC/ST and persons with Disability.
  • However, it is very important to note that these high level institutes pay a lot of attention to your academic record and as such any candidate with compartment/supplementary in any subject in the qualifying examination is debarred from seeking admission.


All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)

This prestigious entrance exam is conducted exclusively for admission to NLU, Delhi. The exam consisting of 150 questions tests an aspirant’s ability and skills in English, Maths, logical reasoning, legal aptitude and GK. Upper age limit for a general candidate is 21 years and 23 years for SC/ST candidates.

LSAT – India

The LSAT - India is a standardized test designed by the USA based Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for use by law schools in India. Some of the prominent colleges accepting the LSAT- India scores for admissions to their law programs are as following:


  • Law College Dehradun, 
  • Bharat Law College, Jaipur, 
  • Siddhartha College of Law, Mumbai, 
  • JSS Law College, Mysore and ICFAI Law School among others  
  • The test is of 2 hours and 35 minutes duration with 15 minutes break and consists of four sections.
